Germany Relies on FlexSecure: FlexiTrust HS at the Federal German Network Agency

The Federal German Network Agency (BNA) regulates not just the postal and telecommunications markets. It is also Germany’s top-tier national authority for electronic certificates. The BNA issues certificates for certificate service providers in compliance with the provisions of the German Signature Act (SigG). These service providers supply their end customers in turn with electronic certificates and signatures. All qualified certificates of accredited providers can be verified in an uninterrupted backtrack to the root certificate of the Federal German Network Agency. Moreover, the BNA operates a directory service and a revocation service. The directory service can be accessed around the clock. Here, you can download certificate and revocation lists, or verify the status of a given certificate. Managing these certificates therefore makes the trust center subject to the highest requirements in terms of availability and scalability. The chief priority, however, is given to the uncompromising high security standards that the trust center must support. One solution provided by a German specialist for IT security satisfies all of these requirements – the FlexiTrust HS trust center solution by FlexSecure GmbH in Darmstadt. The Federal German Network Agency has successfully used FlexiTrust HS since 2003. The entire solution is highly available. It also has a redundant layout, consisting of two systems operating side by side. FlexiTrust HS uses its own crypto library that permits the deployment of innovative security mechanisms such as the elliptic curve cryptography (ECC), among other things. FlexiTrust HS is tested according to the “Common Criteria for Information Technology Security” and meets all requirements of the German Signature Act. “Even in regard to its basic setup, the software of FlexSecure satisfies essential requirements of the Federal German Network Agency," commented Reinhard Ochsenkühn (T-Systems). “It has a modular design, which not only makes it easy to scale but also prepares it for the deployment of new security algorithms. From our point of view, this makes it an excellent basis for custom adjustments."
